Resource and infrastructure work at the Ministry of Works and Development helped establish early computer-based geographic information. The New Zealand Land Resource Inventory brought mapped information about land into a form that could be stored and analysed. Mainframe computing, resource classification and the requirements of government programmes shaped the work.
