W. I. Reilly published the New Zealand Map Grid design in 1973. NZMG used a polynomial expression tailored to reduce scale distortion over New Zealand and was used with NZGD49 for the NZMS260 topographic series.

NZMG’s specialised mathematics later proved difficult to support in some international software. LINZ replaced it with a newer official grid in 2001; historic coordinates still need their original grid and a documented transformation.
