James Brasington's river-science research connects geomorphology, hydrology and remote sensing. He holds a BSc from the University of Bristol and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. His Waterways Centre profile identifies him as professor of river science and centre director, studying river responses to environmental change, sediment transport, flood risk and the use of remote sensing to understand river condition.

Richard Williams, James Brasington, Damià Vericat and Murray Hicks combined mobile terrestrial laser scanning with aerial photography and optical bathymetric mapping over a Rees River braided reach in research published in 2014. Their work assembled more than five billion survey observations into detailed terrain information. Processing, storing and analysing billions of points required methods suited to the size and structure of the survey data.
