Marcus Frean is an associate professor in engineering and computer science at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. He holds an honours BSc from Massey University and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. His research training included neural information processing at Cambridge, work on the evolution of cooperation at Otago, and boosting and inference at the University of Queensland. This provides a broader machine-learning background to his historical-map research.
