At the first national multidisciplinary GIS conference in Wellington in June 1989, P. G. Luckman, R. G. Gibb and M. R. Jessen presented work integrating expert systems and GIS for land classification and assessment. A peer-reviewed follow-up appeared in the New Zealand Geographer in 1990. Those rule-based systems encoded geographic classification through computational reasoning before modern machine-learning methods.

Robert Gibb led GUILD-on-the-Web at Landcare Research, with David Medyckyj-Scott as co-developer. Released in January 1996, it was an early public web service for environmental spatial data. Gibb and Medyckyj-Scott published their account of the system at the 1996 Spatial Information Research Centre colloquium. The earlier references to R. G. Gibb in this history are retained under his full name.
Gibb later worked with Alexander Raichev and Michael Speth on rHEALPix, a discrete global grid system with identified, nested cells. He contributed to the OGC DGGS specification and edited its 2021 Part 1 revision, associated with ISO 19170-1:2021. This work connected Manaaki Whenua’s research in spatial referencing with an international standards programme. It sits alongside his earlier work in remote sensing, GIS and land assessment.
