A GNS Science project by R. Langridge and W. Ries, undertaken in 2009, mapped the Alpine Fault through Buller, Grey and Westland using GIS, QMAP, University of Otago fault mapping, RTK-GPS topography, sketch maps, aerial photographs, orthophotos and field checking. The project converted those sources into fault traces, attribute tables and planning-oriented Fault Avoidance Zones, generally at about 1:10,000. At Franz Josef, the report compared an Otago-derived trace with a dashed fault line already used by the regional council.
