The 2010 browser mapping and image access system for a major 2008–2010 Bay of Islands biodiversity and seabed survey.
NIWA surveyed Bay of Islands marine habitats in two phases between 2008 and 2010 for a LINZ-funded Ocean Survey 20/20 project. Multibeam bathymetry, side-scan sonar, biological samples, video, photographs and oceanographic observations formed distinct but geographically linked datasets.
In December 2010 NIWA reported that a public portal built with Wellington software firm SilverStripe made high-resolution seabed maps, survey reports, layer-based web maps and about 20,000 images accessible to users. It was a finalist in the 2010 New Zealand Open Source Awards. NIWA's Dr Mark Morrison was named project leader, with Brent Wood linked to spatial-data management.
The portal delivered actual survey information rather than only promising a future web-map service. The later status of original links, source application code and image download archives has not been established from the 2010 announcement.
