The former 1:63,360 national topographic sheets, drawn on the North and South Island Yard Grids.
The inch-to-the-mile NZMS1 series formed an important pre-digital source of contours, watercourses, roads, place names and landforms. LINZ records that the island yard grids were used for mainland one-inch mapping between 1942 and 1973. These sheets provided a reference for later metric mapping, but the map image and any vector data subsequently captured from it must be distinguished.

A map sheet records the position and classification of features at the date it was compiled or revised. Its linework does not automatically describe present-day locations, roads or watercourses.
