The Treasury installed an IBM 650 in 1960; it was formally opened on 23 March 1961. Its first major application was the fortnightly payroll for about 34,000 public servants.
The payroll run calculated pay and deductions, stored results on magnetic tape, and produced vouchers and punched-card cheques. Treasury’s computer also acted as a bureau for other departments before much government processing moved to a central computer centre in 1970.
