Survey and Spatial NZ Tātai Whenua participates in LINZ’s network of geospatial groups and in sector-wide work on workforce capability. Its professional-association role sits alongside contributions to the Geospatial Capability Committee and the GIS Survey Committee.

Survey and Spatial New Zealand / Tātai Whenua is the professional association representing surveying and spatial practitioners in New Zealand. Government and LINZ material describes its membership as spanning cadastral and engineering surveying, positioning, hydrography and the spatial/GIS sector. The organisation was formerly the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors, preserving a much older surveying lineage while broadening its professional scope.

Its role in the GIS community includes professional development, sector representation and participation in the New Zealand Spatial Excellence Awards. In 2018 the awards were a joint initiative of LINZ, Survey and Spatial New Zealand and the Spatial Industries Business Association, with awards covering spatial projects, education and individual professional contributions.
