W. I. Reilly designed the New Zealand Map Grid, published in 1973. LINZ’s technical history credits the projection to him. NZMG provided the coordinate framework for national metric topographic mapping and became a common reference system in New Zealand GIS data before the transition to NZTM2000.

W. I. Reilly published the NZMG design in 1973, and the new 1:50,000 NZMS260 topographic series began appearing later in the decade. The first sheet, T12 Thames, was published in 1977.
