Otago connected surveying, geographic information and research through teaching and professional exchange. The SIRC conference lineage provided a recurring forum for spatial-information research. Māori spatial research associated with Hauiti Hākopa also examined how mapping could support information embedded in ancestral landscapes.
Its School of Surveying introduced the Land and Spatial Information Studies degree in the late 1980s.
