LINZ describes its 1:250,000 topographic base data as generalised from the 1:50,000 data. Features are selected and simplified for smaller-scale maps. The database and its Topo250 raster cartography serve different tasks even where the geographic subjects overlap.
Its lineage runs through the detailed topographic base rather than being a digital copy of every line on a historical quarter-million map. Scale and generalisation affect how accurately its geometry can be compared with older maps.
